Urban Farmer Ayurveda

I love incorporating ancient practices and different food lifestyles into my daily routine. Sometimes I get a little off track with healthful eating and need to hit the reset button on my digestive system, as I'm sure you do too! I designed this one-day cleansing recipe, combining Ayurvedic medicine with a Texas twist. Try it!

Step 1: Get your ingredients together. Here I have carrots, celery, butternut squash, and garlic from my local farmer's market. The kale and parsley are from the urban farm. (No measurements. Use your intuition!) Chop everything into large chunks, which will make fishing the veggies out easier when the broth is ready.

Step 2: Add everything together in a large ceramic pot with several cups filtered water. The spices I used are turmeric for the Ayurveda, plus Ancho chile powder and cayenne pepper for my Texas kick and metabolism boost. Bring to a boil then cover and simmer for 4 hours.

Step 3: Strain the lifeless veggies out and put into your compost bin. Remember, this is farm to table to farm cooking! Save what you can't eat for your garden; your plants will thank you.

Step 4: Enjoy the broth as it provides you with vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients during the day of your cleanse. Take time to reflect and be mindful. Drink water and herbal tea during the day for hydration, which will also help calm your digestive tract.

Please note: This is a cleanse that you would want to do maybe once a quarter, and is not at all for weight release purposes. I am in no way advocating drinking only broth as a regular diet plan!

Cleansing is great not only for the physical health benefits but the spiritual and emotional sides. Taking the time to slow down and prepare the broth - to really nourish yourself - is part of the cleansing ritual. Enjoy what nature has provided, and allow your body to get used to eating real food again. And when you add your Texan spices to the mix, you won't even realize you're cleansing!

Till next time,

Dallas Farmer Gal
